Biography
Mary Abbott, along with her contemporaries Jackson Pollack and Willem de Kooning, helped develop Abstract Expressionism in the 1940s and '50s. Abbott was coined for her vibrant colors, sweeping, and energetic brushstrokes creating emotional abstractions. Drawing inspration from mythology, religion, and- above all else- nature. She was an active member in the New York School, mentored by Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and de Kooning. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art. the Denver Museum, and the Palm Springs Art Museum, among other institutions, and is held in numerous public and private collections.
