Bruce Silverstein Gallery presents its third solo show with the photographer Mark Cohen entitled Grim Street.
Mark Cohen is known for his iconic off-kilter street photographs. Since the late 1960's, his work has demonstrated an unusual aspect of Americana that is as distinct and idiosyncratic as the work of William Eggleston, Lee Friedlander, and Joel Sternfeld.
The renowned photographer will exhibit a highly original body of color work shot in the 1960s and 1970s that is set in his working class hometown of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. The show will also feature early black and white photographs. Cohen's pre-focused camera catches the quotidian oddities of daily life and in doing so reminds us of his innovation and place among his contemporaries.
In 1973 Mark Cohen held solo shows at the Museum of Modern Art and the Light Gallery. Among many honors, his photo of a strobe-lit girl blowing a bubble was included in John Szarkowski's seminal book Mirrors and Windows, American Photography Since 1960. He is twice the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and is a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow.
The exhibition will run in conjunction with the release of the artist’s first monograph, Mark Cohen: Grim Street, published by Powerhouse Books.
