Seven Artists Move Ahead in Madison Indigenous Art Project

Metal silhouettes with Ho-Chunk themes, a wooden map of Teejop burial mounds and a shelter made from young trees and cattails are all being considered for a new cross-city art project.

 

Next year, five Madison sites will host a series of temporary art installations rooted in Teejop history and place-based storytelling. The project, led by the Madison Arts Commission, invites the public to reflect on Teejop, the Ho-Chunk name for the Madison area, meaning “Four Lakes.” 

 

After a month-long review process, MAC has selected seven artists from a pool of 16 to move forward with proposals for the Teejop Community History Public Art Project, a one-time initiative developed in collaboration with Ho-Chunk community members.
