The world’s most highly regarded photographers will gather at the Indy Art Center October 7 to 11 for a week of photography events in collaboration with the International Photography Hall of Fame.

International Photography Hall of Fame at the Indy Art Center.

The Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the art and science of photography.

Open to the public, the series of events starts with a four-day workshop and includes a photography exhibition (open for free during Art Center hours), a free lecture and tips on Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, as well as a panel discussion and a ceremony welcoming six new members into the Hall of Fame.

Also at the ceremony, IPHF will present its Visionary Award to renowned South African photographer Zanele Muholi (they/them). A self-described visual activist, Muholi has gained international acclaim for their powerful portraits and self-portraits that document and celebrate Black LGBTQ+ communities. Their work challenges erasure, affirms identity, and confronts injustice, embodying a bold and transformative vision that continues to inspire worldwide.

The photographers coming to Indy to be honored and to participate in the panel discussion are:

  • David Burnett. Washington, D.C.-based photojournalist David Burnett has covered pivotal moments in history over the past five decades. His work spans conflict zones, Olympic Games and political campaigns, always with a unique blend of technical precision and emotional depth.
  • Keith Carter. Known for its poetic, dreamlike images of the American South, Keith Carter’s photography explores myth, memory and time. His work blurs the line between documentary and art, offering profound visual storytelling.
  • Adger Cowans. A master photographer and painter, Adger Cowans has created a powerful legacy through his experimental fine art photography. His images of everyday life, culture and jazz legends capture the soul of the Black American experience.
  • Sheila Metzner. Brooklyn-based Sheila Metzner was the first female photographer to break into the exclusive world of fashion photography in the pages of Vogue. Her painterly style redefined fashion imagery with elegance and romanticism.
  • Zanele Muholi. (See above.)
