Romania marks Brâncuși Year 2026: national celeberations open on the sculptor’s birthday

Oana Vasiliu, Business Review, February 18, 2026

Romania steps into Brâncuși Year 2026 with a nationwide and international series of cultural events dedicated to one of the most influential figures of modern art, Constantin Brâncuși. The official momentum builds around February 19, the sculptor’s birthday, which this year becomes both a commemorative date and a symbolic starting point for months of exhibitions, symposiums, performances and educational programs across the country and abroad.

Recognized as the pioneer of modern sculpture, Brâncuși’s legacy extends far beyond Romania’s borders. The 150th anniversary of his birth provides an opportunity not only for homage, but also for renewed dialogue about Romanian cultural identity, artistic innovation and the country’s positioning within the European cultural landscape.

Bucharest: a dense calendar of urban cultural events

The capital hosts a significant share of the opening events, turning February into an urban cultural circuit dedicated to Brâncuși’s work and influence.

Among the most visible initiatives is the “Brâncuși 150 – Brâncuși Ne Privește Pe Toți” exhibition at the National Museum of Art of Romania (MNAR), which explores the sculptor’s universal gaze and the contemporary relevance of his artistic philosophy. The exhibition is accompanied by screenings, guided tours and public talks aimed at bridging academic discourse with general audiences.

At the same time, the Cesianu-Racoviță Palace temporarily hosts a large-scale visual reinterpretation of The Kiss Gate, bringing one of Brâncuși’s most emblematic symbols into Bucharest’s architectural fabric until early March. The installation acts as both homage and urban intervention, encouraging passers-by to rediscover national heritage outside traditional museum walls.
