MARJAN TEEUWEN IN PARADISE LOST - GAZING AT CONTEMPORARY URBAN CIVILIZATION AND ITS METAPHOR

Jut Art Museum, December 29, 2019
Paradise Lost explores human conditions in the Anthropocene and questions the changes of cityscapes along with humanity and the development of capitalism, as well as the explosions of wars?
There are public institutes no longer in use (schools and prisons), or cozy houses after the subprime crisis, or hotels with oceanic views but the development was halted during the energy crisis, homes destroyed by wars, or working places sacrificed by globalization. These building remnants are the “Paradise Lost” physically inscribed with the consequences of our desires and wills. Setting out from the point view of contemporary art, while relics of buildings or abandoned sites under different times and caused by different reasons become the medium, this exhibition looks into the destruction and rebirth of urban civilization, as well as reflects the future of cities.
