The occasion for this portrait of like-minded Dada poets and writers is said to have been Man Ray's first solo exhibition in Paris, staged at the bookshop Librairie Six during the month of December 1921. The location is Man Ray's 22 rue La Condamine room. November has been suggested as the date of the gathering, and the portrait, shortly before the exhibition opened on December 3rd.Present in the photograph are: Paul Chadourne, Tristan Tzara, Philippe Soupault, Serge Charchoune; bottom, Paul Eluard, Jacques Rigaut, Mick Soupault, and Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes. Among the sitters are Mick Soupault, who ran the bookshop and would host the exhibit, and her husband Philippe. Man Ray is himself represented, although not part of the sitting. Eluard leans on a painting by Man Ray. At a later date Man Ray cut out a photograph of himself and pasted it overtop the visible portion of the painting.

This is the only known uncropped print of Man Ray’s iconic photograph, Le Baiser (The Kiss), which features Lee Miller and an unidentified sitter. Man Ray folded this print to experiment with the cropping, ultimately honing in on their painted lips. Man Ray would reference Le Baiser throughout his career, and the image would ultimately serve as the subject for his celebrated Image à deux faces (Two-Faced Image), painted in 1959.

The film source dates from 1926, and the printing dates to no later than 1927. The handwriting is that of Man Ray, confirming his authorship of the work, and informing our understanding of the nature of the work. "

According to the verso inscription this print had once belonged to the sitter Valentine Hugo, and mentions her 2 rue de Sontay Paris address. At some point the print was gifted to Chantal and Jean Petithory, based on the verso dedication. Jean Petithory was the publisher of Man Ray's 1966 edition Résurrection des Mannequins.

Man Ray created a small number of playing cards using original portraits made of his friends. Among those extant cards are: Nusch Eluard, as the queen of clubs, Lise Deharme as the queen of spades, and Jacqueline Lamba (later Breton) as the queen of hearts.
