Walter Iooss Jr. (b. 1943) is widely regarded as one of the most influential sports photographers of the past sixty years. Described as both the "poet laureate of sports" and the "Rembrandt of sports photography," Iooss has transformed the way athletic achievement is represented through his exceptional command of light, color, timing, and composition. His photographs transcend the fame of their subjects, capturing moments of extraordinary physical grace, intensity, and emotion that have become defining images of modern sporting culture. His work has appeared on more than 300 covers of Sports Illustrated, more than that of any other photographer in the magazine's history.

Born in Temple, Texas, on September 15, 1943, Iooss moved with his family to East Orange, New Jersey, at an early age. Raised in a family of avid sports enthusiasts, he developed an early fascination with athletics and photography. His father gave him his first camera at fifteen, and within a year he was photographing professional football games. He subsequently attended the German School of Photography in New York, and at seventeen, the year he graduated from East Orange High School, received his first assignment from Sports Illustrated. By the age of twenty, he was photographing covers for the magazine, beginning a remarkable association that would span nearly six decades.

Central to Iooss's artistic practice is his ability to anticipate rather than merely react to the action unfolding before him. He frequently envisions a photograph long before it is made, sometimes contemplating an image for years before the opportunity to realize it presents itself. By carefully considering lighting, camera position, lens selection, and composition in advance, he creates the conditions in which a fleeting athletic moment can become an enduring image. Equally important is the trust and rapport he establishes with his subjects, allowing him to capture moments of intimacy and vulnerability alongside the public spectacle of competition. His photographs reveal not only the physical accomplishments of exceptional athletes but also their individuality, determination, and humanity. Between 1968 and 1972, Iooss served as an in-house photographer for Atlantic Records, photographing musicians while continuing his work in sports. Over the course of his career, he has documented virtually every major sporting discipline, including baseball, basketball, boxing, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and surfing. His subjects include some of the most celebrated athletes in history, among them Mickey Mantle, Michael Jordan, Pelé, and Serena Williams. Iconic photographs such as Roger Maris Hits His 61st Home Run (1961), The Catch (1982), and The Blue Dunk (1987) demonstrate his extraordinary ability to distill athletic achievement into compositions of lasting visual power. Iooss photographed the first fifty-two Super Bowls, an unprecedented record that reflects both his longevity and his central role in documenting modern sports history. In the early 1980s, he temporarily departed the staff of Sports Illustrated to undertake a commission for Fujifilm, following American athletes as they prepared for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The project culminated in Shooting for the Gold, a photographic exploration of athletic dedication and achievement. His celebrated collaboration with Michael Jordan produced Rare Air, an intimate visual portrait of one of the greatest basketball players of all time. For four decades, Iooss also photographed the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, bringing his distinctive sense of light, form, and composition to a different genre of editorial photography. In 1999, Iooss traveled to Havana, Cuba, where he photographed young athletes diving, boxing, and playing baseball with improvised equipment, including balls fashioned from tape. These images reveal another dimension of his practice, one less concerned with celebrated athletes and professional competition than with the universal experience of sport. Throughout his career, whether photographing an international superstar or a child playing in the street, Iooss has maintained a consistent fascination with movement, gesture, and the expressive possibilities of the human form.

In 2021, Bruce Silverstein Gallery announced its exclusive international representation of Iooss, recognizing his significant contribution to the history of photography. The gallery subsequently presented Victory Lap, an exhibition of fifty photographs celebrating his extraordinary career, followed by Athlete, which brought together iconic images and previously unexhibited works, offering a broader perspective on his artistic achievement. In June 2024, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art inaugurated The Perfect Shot: Walter Iooss Jr. and the Art of Sports Photography, a major traveling retrospective scheduled to continue through May 2029.

Iooss's career has also been recognized through numerous publications, exhibitions, and honors. His photographs formed the foundation of ESPN's three-part documentary G.O.A.T.s: Greatest of All Time, while Christie's presented a dedicated single-artist sale of his work in New York in 2020. He received the Lucie Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2004 and was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame in 2018. His photographs are held in prominent public collections, including the George Eastman Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Delaware Art Museum, and the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University, among others.
