Biography

Mark Cohen (b. 1943) was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1943. He was picked by Nathan Lyons to take part in his first important group exhibition Vision and Expression, held at the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House in Rochester, in 1969. Four years later a one man exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York brought his work to the attention of the wider public and subsequently his works were exhibited at major American institutions, including the Light Gallery, Castelli Graphics and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1975 William Jenkins, curator at the George Eastman House, commissioned a series of his color photographs sponsored by the Kodak Company, as part of an experimental program. In 1978 John Szarkowski invited him to take part in the key exhibition Mirrors and Windows. American Photography since 1960. Grim Street (powerHouse Books, 2005) is the title of his first monograph, followed by a second book, True Color (powerHouse Books, 2007), two years later.

An adjunct professor at Princeton University and other American universities, he has been awarded two Guggenheim Fellowships (1971 and 1976) and an NEA Photographer's Fellowship (1975).
