Financial Times, January 2, 2018

The artist explored the camera's ability to capture something beyond what is seen.

Belgian artist René Magritte (1898-1967), a leading figure in the Surrealist movement, was known for his reality-distorting paintings. From an early age, Magritte also applied his experimental approach to photography.

Never exhibited in public in his lifetime, Magritte's playful images bear the motif's of his paintings. Obscured self-portraits featuring his own canvases are characterised by their offbeat angles and poses.
