EXHIBITION REVIEW: EDIFICE AS ARTIFACT

Rowynn Dumont, Cooph

Edifice as Artifact is an exhibition running through September 17th (2022) at Bruce Silverstein Gallery (New York). Turkish artist Ahment Ertug takes monumental photographs. Originally, Ahment was trained as an architect and has spent his life documenting the interiors of cultural heritage sites, places of worship, theaters, libraries, and palazzos. The images themselves present as a stand-alone work of art.

In this exhibit, Ahment focused on images showcasing 50 years of documenting his homeland, Istanbul. Photographs include depictions of the Hagia Sophia, the Topkapı Palace, and the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne. Ertuğ has exhibited with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization at Couvent des Cordelier and La Conciergerie in Paris and the Ephesos Museum in the Kunst Historisches Museum Wien in Vienna.
