From Brancusi’s modernism to Krasner and Pollock’s midcentury stylings to Arthur Jafa’s contemporary lens, there’s something for everyone this season.
Sarah Sense: Land, Line, Blood, Memory
Bruce Silverstein Gallery, 529 West 20th Street (4th Floor), Chelsea, Manhattan
Sept. 17–Nov. 7
Chitimacha/Choctaw artist Sarah Sense’s latest series frames traditional rivercane basket weaving as a restorative practice, one that reconnects her with her ancestry and cultural traditions while creating a tangible heirloom for future generations. Singular in her technique and artistic vision, Sense weaves landscape photographs printed on rice and bamboo paper together with documents such as maps and treaties as a deliberate reversal of colonial erasure and dispossession.
