In photography, light is the medium’s essence, shaping each photograph’s composition, mood, texture, and depth.
During the long days of summer, light evolves from the soft, diffused glow of the Golden Hour (the period after sunrise and before sunset) and the ethereal Blue Hour (before sunrise and after sunset) to the bright, direct overhead, midday sun, allowing photographers to create images defined by stark contrast and shortened shadows.
To pay homage to this summer light, Bruce Silverstein Gallery is pleased to present “Summer Glow,” an exhibition that explores the effects of the unique qualities of summer rays on the art of picture making. Featuring a curated selection of works by over thirty artists, spanning from 1903 to 2018, Summer Glow is a diverse collection of photographs that captures the unique interplay of light and shadow only seen during the summer season. With lush landscapes by Elger Esser and Manuel Alvarez Bravo, abstracted sands by Aaron Siskind, intimate family moments captured by Chester Higgins, and tranquil scenes by Adger Cowans, each artist brings a unique perspective. Using the summer light, they transform seemingly ordinary scenes into serene and dynamic compositions that resonate with both tranquility and vibrancy.
