Michael Wolf

Michael Wolf (1954 - 2019) was a world renowned German photographer whose works investigated new perspectives in urban life and human/habitat relation. His work, notably the series Paris Rooftops, Architecture of Density, Transparent City, and Tokyo Compression, addressed the realities of metropolitan existence, defined by vanishing privacy, urban density, and isolation. Using crops from his architectural landscapes and pioneering the appropriation of Google’s Street View imagery, he isolated anonymous city dwellers, voyeuristically emphasizing modern surveillance culture. Wolf’s eye for detail allowed him to introduce visual language into his work and balance the private and the public, anonymity and individuality, the distant and the up close. Wolf’s deliberate and engaging compositions highlighted his innovative vision, reflecting a new approach to imagining our world’s most photographed cities.

Wolf was born in 1954 to Anna and Arne Wolf in Munich, Germany. Both artists, Anna specialized in painting and pottery and Arne was a calligrapher. Wolf grew up in the United States, Europe, and Canada, following the careers of his parents, who taught as well as worked. After attending the North Toronto Collegiate Institute and the University of California, Berkeley, Wolf graduated from the University of Essen, Germany with a BA in Visual Communication in 1976. He began his career as a photojournalist in 1994, working in Hong Kong for the German magazine, Stern, for eight years. While there, Wolf studied China’s cultural identity and the complexities of its urban architecture. Wolf passed away in 2019 at the age of 65.

In his lifetime, Wolf garnered much recognition. He won first prize in the World Press Photo Award Competition in 2005 and 2010. In 2010 and 2016, he was shortlisted for the prestigious Prix Pictet. Wolf had exhibitions at many fine institutions while living, including Les Rencontres d’Arles, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. His work is held in permanent collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Folkwang Museum, Essen, Germany; the Brooklyn Museum; the Cleveland Museum of Art; the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum, Kansas City; and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago.

Wolf published numerous monographs including, Michael Wolf Works (2017), Tokyo Compression Revisited (2011), Real Fake Art (2011), Tokyo Compression (2010), Hong Kong: Inside/Outside (2009), The Transparent City (2008), Hong Kong: Front Door/Back Door, (2005), and Sitting in China (2002).
