Larry Silver (b. 1934) has photographed for more than seven decades, consistently turning his attention to the places he has called home: the streets and subways of postwar New York, the bodybuilders of Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, and the suburban landscape of Connecticut. He began photographing at fifteen and has never stopped. Working primarily in black and white, he combines the directness of documentary photography, shaped by the legacy of the Photo League, with a lyricism distinctly his own.
Born in the Bronx, Silver received a Brownie camera from his mother, converted his bedroom into a darkroom and developed prints in the family bathroom. While attending the High School of Industrial Art in Manhattan, he met the photographers associated with the Photo League who gathered at the Peerless Camera Store on East 44th Street, among them Lou Bernstein, W. Eugene Smith and Weegee. Their influence helped turn his early pictorial approach toward documentary photography. In his senior year, he won first prize in the Scholastic-Ansco Photography Awards and received a full scholarship to the Art Center School in Los Angeles. There, he made his Muscle Beach photographs, drawn to the Santa Monica landmark for its resemblance to Coney Island.
Silver returned to New York in 1959 and opened an advertising studio the following year, establishing a substantial commercial reputation while continuing to pursue his personal work. His photographs appeared in Forbes, Life and Time. In 1973, he moved to Westport, Connecticut, an established artists’ colony, where he began documenting suburban life and its inhabitants, the shifting relationship between nature and the built environment, and Sherwood Island State Park, which he has photographed for half a century.
Bruce Silverstein Gallery presented From the Medium to the Message in 2007 and New Vision in 2011. Muscle Beach, 1954 was exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1999, and the International Center of Photography presented the series in 1985. In 2016, the New-York Historical Society mounted Photographs by Larry Silver, 1949–1955, an exhibition of forty-five images of the postwar city. In 2015, Silver also had solo exhibitions at the Fundación Canal in Madrid and the Housatonic Museum of Art in Bridgeport.
Silver’s photographs are held in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the George Eastman Museum, The Jewish Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of the City of New York, the New-York Historical Society and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. He lives and works in Westport, Connecticut.
